It's Road Trip Weekend! Chris and I are hitting the open road tomorrow morning. We'll be staying in Tupelo tomorrow night, Atlanta Saturday and Birmingham on Sunday. It's the Carter Family Deep South Tour '09! If you need us, we'll be on Highway 78, rockin'to the Carolina Chocolate Drops while drinking Peach Nehi till our teeth rot out. Here's hoping we'll have time to stop off at The World's Largest Office Chair!

The ultimate goal of our road trip will be to arrive, safe and sound, at The Not Wedding in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday night. There I will be hocking my buttony wares & doing my best to convince the gathered brides that bartering cash for buttons is the way to go in these tough economic times. I don't know if you've read The Economist lately but "Purchasing 1 Inch Buttons" is right between "Grow your own Victory Garden" and "Put All Your Money in a Mattress" in their list of ways to ride out the recession. My dads favorite tip, "Shut the Refrigerator Door," is a distant fourth.

When I get back from Atlanta I might have time for things other than button making... like blogging... and also doing the dishes.

I hate to be all “Poor little Insured Girl” while the self-employed of the world play a Shostakovich concerto on teeny tiny violins… but MAN, no one told me that health insurance would be such a gigantically painful hassle! I would almost prefer to sit for hours on end at a public health clinic. Sure snotty kids got their sticky sick fingers all over me… and the screaming… ohgodthescreaming… but I’d pay my 15 bucks, and as soon as I stepped out the door I could begin forgetting the whole awful experience.

Having health insurance is like a PTSD flashback of hassle. Three months after my initial visit with my internist, the claim rejection letters start rolling in. Then the phone calls… and the hours of hold time with customer care. After spending 47 years of my life that I’ll never get back, it all turned out to be a simple misunderstanding. My doctor’s office had erroneously attached me to my husband’s policy . . . also Pacificare thought I was a man.

“Not a big deal,” said Ms. Customer Care. “At least not till you try filing a claim at a gynecologist, or try to receive prenatal care.” Just the same, I’d kind of like my pharmacist to stop looking at me funny.

When it’s all said and done, Pacificare . . . I love you baby. I didn’t mean to say all those hateful things about you. I really love how, out of all my prescriptions, it was the $450 2oz bottle of lotion that you decided to cover instead of all those cheap generics… and I love you for that. Don’t ever go.

Earlier this summer, Chris and I moved our bathtub to the front porch in order to keep up the illusion that we are still working on our disaster of a bathroom. I promise that leaving the tub there where it sat was not a part of our plan. This was not a vain attempt at winning the hearts and minds of our neighbors... although, let me tell you, nothing will improve your chances of winning Neighbor of the Year more than bathroom fixtures next to your front door. We had every intention of putting it in Chris' truck and hauling it over to Habitat for Humanity. Promise. But the thing was about 400 pounds more than the poor little pick-up could handle... so there it sat.

I'm sure our postman appreciated the tub since it was right in front of our mailbox. He's used to it though, since it seems that each day there's a new and different piece of debris out there chronicling our home's destruction from the inside out. We call it the Mailbox Physical Challenge. Sure we'd like our Netflix, but could you complete this obstacle course first?

But the tub is gone now. Sold on Craigslist for $50 when, really, if the buyers had been just a little bit better at negotiating, they could have talked us into giving them $50 just for haulin' it away.

We'll miss you old tub. I had just gotten used to giving directions to our home by pointing people to the "house with a bathtub on the porch"... and now you're gone.

Gah. I'm tired of looking at my stupid mug... let's move it down the page a bit, shall we?

Yesterday, I finally heard back about the job. Lord Almighty. I don't know if you've ever sought employment with a state office but you have to set aside like half of your life just to sit and wait. Then you mail a form. And then you wait some more. And then you mail that same form again, along with two copies. Then? More waiting. 15 years later, you've got a job!

Well.. I will have a job... after the drug test comes back in another week. And then I don't actually start till the middle of August. OH MY LORD SO MUCH WAITING!

The position I wanted the very most is still in process but I've grown old and wrinkly and need to move on BUT please please please could I please wait a while longer so they can get their act together? No. Sorry, I can't. Mama needs to buy a loaf of bread. Good thing I have a few more design jobs lined up before then cause it would be a little sad if I had to go on gov't assistance while waiting to get my first paycheck from DHS, don't ya think?

Yesterday, I sat in the drug testin' waiting room with the man who drove this truck:
Tulsa World Story

News Channel 6

His arm was scratched up, but he was in remarkably un-dead condition for having just flipped an exploding truck full of sulfuric acid and bleach. I was glad to hear that the accident was caused by a tire blowout and not through any fault of his own. Way to go Chemical Truck Dude!

Oh and by the way, I highly recommend the National Occupational Health Services for all your drug testing needs. The staff is very professional and friendly... which is hard when you handle the urine of smack addicts for a living. They also had cute hair. The whole lot of 'em.

I dare you to not have a better day after listening to that song.

I tell you what, there's nothing like blasting a little Neil when cruising North Pine with your windows down (they're broken), sportin' your Golden Girls sunglasses (they're the only ones that fit over my regular glasses). Who says gentrification isn't fun for everyone!?

Neil Diamond is coming to Tulsa in October. The tickets are $88 to $695 a piece. That is SO worth it. If someone rich wanted to buy me two tickets for my birthday (September 28) I would accept them with gladness in my heart. You can even come with me, if you would like. For I never cared for the sound of being alone.

Gah... I'm out of coffee...

You know what? I completely forgot about McSweeney's. Man! I love McSweeney's! Especially the lists because, despite the fact that I don't have cable, I have attention deficit disorder.

Favorite lists:
Broadway Musicals Written by Gender-Studies Professors.
Significant Ways I Differ From Carly Simon.
The Wages of Sin
The Lesser-Known Slogans of Political Moderates.

I'm trying to cut back on my coffee, so I've only been brewing six cups each morning. Chris takes 3 of those cups with him in his working man's traveling mug and that leaves one and a half mugs for me if I use my huge Allan Bros. mug with the lip groove. Have you ever used a mug with a lip groove? You don't know true lip comfort until you have used a mug with a lip groove.

Anyway, every time I pour that last half a cup it makes me unbearably sad and full of regret that I didn't brew a full 12 cups like back in the good ol'days.

I've been painting a lot... it's a riot.

One of the many fabulous things about living in Brady Heights is our community garden. Thanks to the monsoon which is currently ruining my basement, our garden is out of control with leafy greeness. We've been picking the strawberries all summer, but this is our first harvest from the vegetable side of things.

Last night, Chris and I started craving curry but didn't want to leave the house. So we trekked across the street to our little garden plot at 10:30pm with flashlights and scissors like garden bandits. I'm sure the neighbors think we're crazy. We totally are, guys. It's true.

Added in some coconut milk, rice, dates and prik khing curry and we had dinner for two plus enough for todays' lunch! Today calls for zucchini bread and the completion of the pea harvest. It's much easier in daylight.

Dear Marissa (circa 2000),
Yesterday I tossed your Juliana Theory t-shirt into a big cardboard box marked "Goodwill". Now, don't cry. Its been years since I've been able to wear it and even longer since I realized that the Theory really weren't all that great to begin with. A little campy even. With the screaming and all? Sorry.

Just think of the little emo kid who will wet themselves in excitement over finding a "vintage" Juliana Theory shirt for 3 bucks amongst all the shirts commemorating team building and 5k runs. I know you go crazy for that kind of thing. Shoot, I still do.

I know, I know. If you had known that we would "grow up" to enjoy banjo music and James McMurtry, you would've slit your wrists... but then, you were a little emotionally unstable and really now, it's your fault that we moved to Oklahoma in the first place. You have to admit that you were kind of asking for it.

Thanks for your understanding,
Marissa

Something downstairs smells vaguely of vomit. It better not be actual vomit or I'm going to be seriously ticked off...
It would also mean that I have a nauseous prowler. No one wants that.

Yes, it is Memorial Day. Yep, I am awake at 6:30 in the morning. It was storming when I went to bed last night and it's the blitzkrieg this morning. I drank my coffee on the front porch and listened to the car alarms go off with each clap of thunder. There's nothing more relaxing than watching the majesty of a thunderstorm with the rumbles of automotive security systems in the distance.
Whatever happened to The Club? So much quieter. Nothing says "scared white kid" like a big red rod attached to your steering wheel and you'll still wake up to a stripped car in the morning. But, by golly, that steering wheel will be there, plus, your neighbor will sleep a lot more soundly.
Fiona was none to pleased about going outside this morning. Her "what, are you kidding me?" look is priceless. As we sat on the porch the rain started to lift and she got a bit more daring, slowly edging her way to the end of the stairs. She seemed very proud of herself when she got to the grass but then the rain had let up completely so, yeah, way to go Big Shot, you're real brave. Every time it rains, she drinks water from puddles as if she's been neglected for weeks. She gives me a look that clearly says I should never be trusted with the care of small children. I'm not one to anthropomorphize my dog or anything.

Dear Punks who stole my lawn mower,
Pshew, You guys sure did save me a lot of trouble when you stole my broken mower. We weren't sure what to do with it really- take it to the dump, shoot it? Sure, it can probably be repaired but if we weren't willing to pay for it, I'm betting you won't either.
I'm going out on a limb here but I'm pretty confident that you're not interested in it's grass cutting capabilities. I wonder how much a pawn shop will give you for a seized up mower. Hopefully it's worth the trouble for you. Oh, and you may not want to test it as it was nigh to the point of explosion when it gave it's dying breath. I'm sure you'll be fine... when you threw it over the fence, it probably helped out a lot.

Thanks again!
Marissa

Posts have been lame and far between as I'm prepping for the Blue Dome Arts Festival. But really, how much do you want to read about how far we AREN'T along on the bathroom? I know I don't want to write it. When you can only afford a freelance electrician once a week for two hours, things don't move very fast.
If anyone needs an electrician in the Tulsa area, let me know, and I'd be more than happy to recommend this dude. He's our new best friend who we pay to hang out with us.

Here's a little somethin' somethin' to get you through my posting lull. Sound Opinions described them as the Scottish White Stripes... in reverse. Listen to these songs and I promise you won't worry about anything ever again. Ever.

So here it is, the Blueprint clipping that has been in my wallet for the last year. It is everything my guest room wishes it could be. This is also the picture that began my obsession with Jonathan Adler's $295 Richard Nixon throw. Curses to you, Blueprint! At one point I actually wanted to try and reproduce the bed EXACTLY, pillow for pillow... but that would've set me back $800. For pillows? No thanks.

Plan B was to try and emulate the feel of the room without spending thousands of dollars. The idea was to keep the same light, airy feel. I loved the look of the photo's white linens with splashes of aqua and citrus introduced through the pillows. I also liked the mix of antique/vintage accessories with the modern designs of the pillows.

Thus, the problem was to find the perfect pillows... since, you know, the entire design of the room was hinging on them. After several false starts, I found two West Elm silk pillow covers on ebay. And then a couple weeks ago... when I least expected it... I found the final pillow! Could it be any more perfecter? No way, cause Nicole Mercurio at Couch Design totally spied into my wallet and designed the perfect pillow that I've always dreamt about. Exciting right? Oh, I know.

See. I told you it was perfect. It looks even better now that it has a pillow form. You'll just have to trust me on that though, cause it's too cloudy to retake the pictures.

The yellow lamp is one of my favorite junk store finds. The chair was salvaged from our old kitchen table set. The doll is purported to be a Canadian Pippi Longstocking and comes from ebay. The two prints are from the fabulous ashleyg.

On the other side of the room... almost everything in this photo came from junk shoppin', except the quilt (made by my great grandmother), the pennants (from my dad's childhood room) and the stuffed cat/bear (Chris' baby toy). If you ever find yourself in Shawnee, OK, make sure and go junk shopping. It's totally worth the risk of being sucked into Shawnee's black hole forever and ever.

So there you go... a very long tour of a very small room. If you ever come to visit, this room could be yours for the night! I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out...and maybe someday the Richard Nixon will take its rightful place at the end of the bed. Argh, how it haunts me!

The neighborhood has been in upheaval lately over the expansion of a homeless mission near our southern border. This could mean the death of us all (or at least our property values)... or it might only mean that a few more men and women receive a bed and a chance to start over. It could go either way.

In this week's UTW, Michael Bates weighs in on this issue – as he does – and neighborhood planning in general.
Read the column online at urbantulsa.com.
(Notice that in the photo cut line, the homeless are referred to as "substance-addled vagrants". I sincerely believe that this is meant to be tongue in cheek ... otherwise my bleeding heart wouldn't be able to take it.)

There is also an opinion piece stating that downtown is being run into the ground. The tone seems a little... cranky. Road maintenance is annoying at best, but it's also temporary and really hardly a reason to be hatin'. Most of the downtown development is still in planning mode – so maybe you guys can wait to start singing the failure song at least until construction starts. Yes, the Brady District has been the butt of planning errors. Yes, the prison location isn't ideal (what were they thinking?!). Unless you have arson up your sleeve, you're just going to have to deal with it... preferably in a constructive manner.

This is the line that bothers me the most:
"People are afraid to come to Downtown Tulsa in the daytime let alone at night. It is axiomatic that anyone who is fearful of venturing into Downtown Tulsa in the daytime is going to be even more fearful of driving or walking around downtown in the dark."

Who are these people who are afraid to go Downtown during the daylight!? Have they been Downtown? Have they been to Tulsa!? Decidedly.Not.Scary. It's "axiomatic" that Tulsans need to toughen up and live a little.
But then I live in North Tulsa... if I want to impress people I only have to tell them that I take out the trash after 9 pm. I'm pretty hardcore after all.

Speaking of being hardcore in Tulsa: I love Indie Tulsa so hard! Red Fork Hippie makes me want to unpack my Holga and take a day trip... after it warms up.

Yesterday I found our neighbor's dog, Tucker, wandering around the ally without his collar. This is not an unusual sight as Tucker is a chronic escapee... poor guy just doesn't like being cooped up. But, what with the pack of wild dogs terrorizing the neighborhood, it's a tough life out there for a collarless dog, and so we're holding Tucker captive in our back yard until our neighbor's return home at the end of the weekend.
Just look at him... isn't he gorgeous? He's a chow/labrador mix and moves like a lion. These pictures really don't do him much justice.

I don't care how big the puppy dog eyes... when a dog's sole claim to fame is smashing through pane glass windows to freedom, I'm just not going to let him stay inside.

Fiona may be small, but she is not easily intimidated.

Fiona doesn't get much canine social interaction.... because she's a dominant terror with a Napoleon complex. I don't blame her... it's a hard life for us kids with stubbly legs.

It doesn't take long before Tucker bows to her obvious superiority... or maybe she just annoys him into submission. Fiona for the win!

My brother Sean came down to Tulsa for Thanksgiving and so I enlisted him in the hanging of our Christmas lights. Of course, it was after he and Chris defied death climbing on the roof that we discovered we hadn't bought hooks to hang lights on the gutters. Whoops. Taking advantage of their position, we decided that it would be an opportune time to remove the large metal awnings from the second floor windows.

So what do you think? With the awnings gone, our house definitely looks less squinty and it really shows off the houses original window panes.

We're doing our best to make the house look friendlier from the street. When we moved in, there was a wall of ivy on the side of the porch and metal bars on all the first floor windows. Even though there are still bars on the front door, hopefully it looks a little less like the people who live here are 80 year old shut-ins afraid of the light.

The story goes that the older gentleman who lived here during the '80s used to leave the house once a year, walk to the front of the yard and shoot his handgun into the air to see which of his neighbors were still around. As far as I can tell, the neighborhood has really improved since then.

While Sean was on the roof it was also an opportune time to take pictures for the sole purpose of making my mom nervous. Yes, that is a pirouette and yes, it did make my mom nervous. Mission accomplished. Sorry mom.

We're back on the interwebs! I would like to take this opportunity to say hello to the outside world, I've missed you all very much. All complaints as to my lack of communication shall be directed to the offices of Cox Communications, whose internet "service" is a joke.

For those who know me and Chris on a personal level, you know that we survive on a steady diet of House, MD and PBS. That's it...that's all we require. We don't love "I love New York", we've never seen a single episode of "The Hills", and even the History Channel in unnecessary. Just give us a set of bunny ears, and please don't call us between 8 and 9pm on Tuesday nights cause, suckas, we're watching Fox and you KNOW we won't answer our phones.

When I say that we watch a lot of PBS, I mean that it's all we watch (except between 8 and 9pm on Tuesdays). It's not because we're elitist or believe that TV will usher in the fall of civilization. We're just cheap. And really? PBS? Pretty awesome.

So, Tulsa, I just want to say that you have BROKEN MY HEART. Even with our state of the art bunny ears (not those $9.99 sets for the amateurs...we splurged for the $15.99 pair) the only channel that comes in is Univision. UNIVISION! Until They start broadcasting with English subtitles, this just will not stand.

I AM NOT going to be strong armed into buying basic cable. Cox Communications shall not win!

We have a house! Someone seems to have taken the doorknob from the master bedroom as a souvenir but other than that everything is intact. Chris and I spent Friday evening wandering around the property and meeting some of our new neighbors. I wish that I could have stayed and visited longer but the mosquitoes were vicious! I think I have more bumps on my legs than non-bumps (Chris is supposedly immune because of his high pickle intake... but that's neither here nor there).
We toured the community garden and even removed some of the ivy from the front porch with some ancient looking shears that Chris found in the garage.
Along with the community garden, our new neighborhood comes complete with a community dog, a long-haired cat who thinks it lives on our porch and even a neighborhood kid who wanders unexpectedly into people's homes to make our sitcom experience complete! Wacky!

And shootings... there are also shootings. Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be one of those "very special episodes".
